Travelers: Ariella
With a fervor for blues, jazz and vintage soul, enigmatic duo, ARIELLA, passionately transcend boundaries, transporting listeners to the heart of what makes music timeless. With elegant vocals by the charismatic Ariella McManus, a singer with emotional depth and a songwriter rich with breadth, she eloquently combines stunning melodies with infectious grooves to create a catchy, immersive sound. Teamed with guitar maestro, Nicolaas Kraster, a talented wunderkind from Fredonia, New York that’s been compared to Ottmar Liebert, Paco de Lucía and Pat Metheny, the pair effortlessly craft an engaging path to the spiritual promised land. On their exhilarating 2019 EP, Live at the Hideaway Café, recorded during a St. Pete heatwave, the blistering set finds the pair excavating the essence of the classics, while delivering a cascading storm of substance and sustenance, bringing to mind a late night soiree with Antônio Carlos Jobim and Astrud Gilberto trading stories with the Buena Vista Social Club.To celebrate the August 7th release of the single "Terrified,” ARIELLA will livestream a series of special shows in conjunction with marquee venues across the eastern U.S.

Travel on with ConciergeQ's interview series TRAVELERS, featuring jazz duo ARIELLA.

ConciergeQ: What is your first memory of traveling?

ARIELLA: My first memory of travel is one I almost can't remember because I was so young. On a drive from Florida to Ohio to visit family I can vaguely recall being in the "bed' in the back of the car with my big brother, Mom at the wheel listening to Patsy Cline or "Achy Breaky Heart" on repeat. When bathroom breaks were needed it was the side of the highway and bushes for us... that'll 'stick' to one's memories for sure. Fuzzy memories that turn into stories told for a lifetime, leaves for toilet paper is ne'er forgotten.

CQ: Share a favorite travel memory.

ARIELLA: One of my very favorite travel memories was a much more recent trip. We were on tour last year and it happened to fall on my birthday week. Nicolaas, my husband/guitarist, had booked us the honeymoon suite at a nearby hotel for the night. We checked in to drop luggage and change clothes and immediately upon entering I saw the jacuzzi tub! We don't usually go all out booking honeymoon suites everywhere we go since when you're on tour your goal is to make money more than spend it. But it was my birthday after all sooo it was an ooooo yes lightbulb overhead! We went to the store and bought bubble bath. As soon as we got in for the night, we lit candles, poured way too much bubble liquid and drank sparkling grape juice. It was incredibly romantic and will forever be one of my favorite travel memories. I literally soaked it in. I live for moments like these.

CQ: Tell us a travel tale…

ARIELLA: A travel tale... Last April, at long last, we booked an international tour in Scotland. Five band members, paperwork, passports, work visas and scheduling, my incredible husband had pulled off organizing a trip of eight gigs in 16 days. Everyone was packed and set to go. Early in the morning we piled into the van, got to the airport and gave the attendant our papers only to find out that it was my husband's passport that had expired the month before. This was also the same week he quit smoking two packs a day after 20 years. Somehow he finegaled a way to put us on the plane while he drove to Miami (on the other side of the state) and miraculously got a passport expedited and made it to the airport in time for our first show all without a cigarette! Not only was it a wonderful experience overall, but he's still a non-smoker to this day.

CQ: Which film has inspired you to travel?

ARIELLA: One film in particular that has inspired me to travel was when I saw the remake of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty with Ben Stiller. There is so much to see and do in this world, when I watch a film like that it forces me to ask myself, what kind of adventure am I on today? My kids are 11 and 12 so I have a few more years before I can go wander the world at length because they lovingly still need me, however, we sure can pack a lot of life into one day. We have many adventures, near and far and right here at home. Last week we went fishing for the first time. A few weeks before that we took the family to a theme park for the day. Sometimes our adventure is a bike ride in our neighborhood or even movie night all piled and snuggled into one bed together. Adventuring takes so many forms but I love the inspiration from Walter Mitty, when I'm chasing something that's important, my willingness is expanded so much that it just might take me all over the world, and I hope it does.

Q: What is your favorite travel song?

ARIELLA: As far as travel music goes, there is no specific playlist in mind for traveling. All music is good travel music. That being said, there is on the flip side, music that takes me traveling in my mind which seems like a relevant alternative answer since there isn't as much travel due to the pandemic. Pretty much anything from the Putumayo collections has the ability to take me lands away in an instant.

CQ: Where would you like to visit in the near future?

ARIELLA: A bucket list trip I'd like to take is all around Asia. I realize of course that this is an entire continent rather than a specific city. Honestly, I'm torn between a few countries in Asia so I'll keep it vague and see where destiny takes me.
