Duluth, Minnesota
Although the Ojibwe Native American name for Duluth, Minnesota is Onigamiinsing, or "at the little portage", for the small portage across Minnesota Point between Lake Superior and western St. Louis Bay, Duluth is named for Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut (c. 1639-1710). In 1679, Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, a French soldier and explorer, was the first European known to have visited the area. In 1681, though Sieur du Lhut yearned for more expeditions, he was forced to return to France to defend himself against false accusations of treason; allegations that Sieur du Lhut believed had origins of envy and jealousy over his lifestyle.
