Eveleth, Minnesota
In 1883, Eveleth, Minnesota was named “in honor of Erwin Eveleth, a timber cruiser employed by Robinson & Flinn, who owned the lands upon which the city is now located.” Robinson & Flinn's initial interest was in the area's plentiful pine forests. However, when Mr. Eveleth “reported erratic behavior of his compass (due to the presence of iron) Robinson & Flinn also reserved the mineral rights.” Although many of the residents wanted to name the town after Mr. Robinson, "Eveleth" was selected because it was easier for the sizable Scandinavian population to pronounce.
