Siem Reap, Cambodia
The name Siem Reap, Cambodia translates literally to the 'Defeat of Siam' (in 1939 Siam was renamed Thailand). The “Defeat of Siam” was commemorated by artist's carvings in stone relief on several area monuments. In 1907, the region, which was previously under Thai control, was officially returned to Cambodia.
