Atlanta, Georgia

Once known as the Native American village of Standing Peachtree, the locale of Atlanta, Georgia was taken from the Cherokees and Creeks by white settlers in 1822. In 1837, when construction began on the Western and Atlantic Railroad, the new settlement was named Terminus. Terminus was nicknamed Thrasherville after John Thrasher (1818–1899) who is known as an Atlanta pioneer. In 1847, Chief Engineer of the Georgia Railroad, J. Edgar Thomson (1808-1874), then suggested that the area be renamed Atlantica-Pacifica, which was then shortened to Atlanta.
