Huntington Beach, California
Huntington Beach, California’s (aka Surf City USA) first European settlement can be traced back to a Spanish soldier stationed at the Presidio of San Diego, Manuel Nieto (1734–1804), who received a Spanish land grant of 300,000 acres. The city of Huntington Beach had many official names, including: Shell Beach, Smeltzer, Fairview, and, Pacific City, as the area grew into a sought after tourist destination. However, in 1909, so as to gain city access to the Red Car train lines that traveled through Los Angeles to Long Beach, Pacific City ceded power to railroad magnate Henry Huntington (1850-1927), who named the city after himself.
