Raleigh, North Carolina
In 1792, the city of Raleigh was chosen as the official site of North Carolina’s new state capital and named for Sir Walter Raleigh (c. 1552-1618). Sir Walter Raleigh was an English aristocrat, writer, poet, soldier, and explorer. He is largely known for introducing tobacco to Europe, as well as sponsoring "The Lost Colony" of Roanoke Island, North Carolina. Between 1585-1587, “several groups attempted to establish a Roanoke Colony, but either abandoned the settlement or disappeared.” The final group of colonists disappeared after three years without a supply delivery from England during the Anglo-Spanish War, thus being dubbed "The Lost Colony."
