Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia
Captain Francis Light (1740–1794), a trader for the British East India Company, founded Georgetown in 1786. Officially established in 1857, Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia, was named in honor of George III (1738–1820), the King of Great Britain and King of Ireland who ruled from 1760–1820. George III's reign is remembered for numerous military conflicts, most notably the Seven Years' War and the American Revolutionary War. In 2008, Georgetown’s historic center was designated as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
