Boise, Idaho
Although the naming of Boise, Idaho is most likely a legend, the Bonneville sojourn lead by Captain Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville (1796–1878), a French-born officer in the United States Army, fur trapper, and explorer in the American West, is often credited. In the spring of 1833, the Bonneville expedition had been trekking for weeks through rough terrain. As the tale goes, upon the sight of the Boise River Valley a French guide exclaimed "Les Bois! Les Bois!" - French for "the trees! the trees!” However, the city’s name may be derived from 1920 French Canadian fur trappers and their first impression of the tree-lined valley of the Boise River. These trappers dubbed the river "La rivière boisée,” which in French means "the wooded river.”
