Bentota, Sri Lanka
Bentota, Sri Lanka, the famed destination resort beach city, located in the Galle District’s southern most tip, is named for the Bentota Ganga or River. The Bentota River's name is derived from an ancient mythical story about a demon named Bem, who ruled this river, and the word for riverbank or “tota.” On December 26, 2004, Bentota, along with the surrounding area cities of Galle, were devastated by the Indian Ocean Tsunami, but continue to rebuild with great success!
