Hallstatt, Austria
Hallstatt, Austria, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, is a beautiful lakeside mountain town with fascinating historical roots. So much so that the name Hallstatt was also given to an Iron Age archeological period, a prehistoric time which classifies any culture that cut with tools and weapons made of iron or steel. The prehistoric people of Hallstatt, Austria excavated the area salt mines, thought to be the world’s first, in production as early as the 2nd century BC. Hence, Hallstatt may be literally translated in its meaning as “the city of salt.”
