Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux, France’s grand tradition is, of course, viticulture. The first local vineyards are thought to have been established by the Romans in the first century. In the 20th century, Bordeaux became the birthplace of the term “French Paradox”—the idea that the health and vitality of the French are nurtured by the apparent contradiction of decadent cuisine and gracious living. Bordeaux may be translated to “bordered by water”, as the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde and Garonne rivers surround the area. Moreover, the city of Bordeaux’s historic Port of the Moon became a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007—"an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble" of the 18th century.
