Cairo, Egypt
The origins of modern Cairo, Egypt may be traced back to numerous settlements in the first millennium. The city's original name in Arabic is "Al-Qahira,” which then became "Cairo" after Europeans altered the name, literally translated to mean "The Vanquisher" or "The Conqueror.” Moreover, modern Egyptians often refer to Cairo as Maṣr, the Arabic pronunciation for the name of Egypt - emphasizing Cairo’s international importance as a bustling cosmopolitan centre.
