Chester, England
The Romans founded Chester as Deva Victrix, a now legendary fortress and town, in the 70s AD. Then, during the early 7th century, the Kingdom of Northumbria captured Chester from the Britons. Moreover, the Saxons are credited with giving Chester its name, as they called any group of Roman buildings a “ceaster.” In time, the term was then corrupted to Chester. Deep roots to Rome may still be enjoyed, as Roman city walls have survived, providing beautiful views of the Chester Cathedral and amphitheatre, as well as serving as a public walkway.
