Zurich, Switzerland
The discovery of the earliest known mention of the name for Zurich, Switzerland was found on a late 2nd century AD tombstone, which read "Turicum tax post.” However, neither Turicum’s linguistic origin, most probably Rhaetic or Celtic, nor its meaning can be determined with any great certainty. The first progression towards the name Zurich is believed to be as early as the 6th century with the form “Ziurichi.” Today, beautiful Zuirch is often also referred to fondly as “Downtown Switzerland.”
