Stockholm, Sweden
The metropolis of Stockholm, with the earliest written mention of the name dating to 1252, is believed to have been founded by Birger Jarl (c.1200–1266), a Swedish statesman, so as to protect Sweden from sea invasions and deter the pillaging of other nearby towns. The first part of the name Stockholm ("stock") may be translated as log in Swedish, although it may also be connected to an old German word meaning fortification. The second part of the name ("holm") translates to islet, and is thought to refer to central Stockholm’s islet, Helgeandsholmen.
