St. Louis, Missouri
In 1682, the French explorer Robert de LaSalle led an expedition south from the Illinois River to the mouth of the Mississippi, and claimed the entire valley in the name of France. La Salle then named the Mississippi river basin “Louisiana” after France’s King Louis XIV (1638–1715), also known as the Sun King. St. Louis, a major port on the Mississippi River, was officially founded in 1764 and was also named in honor of King Louis XIV.
