Johannesburg, South Africa
First established in 1886, when gold was discovered in the region, Johannesburg generated a population explosion and quickly became the largest city in South Africa. Johannes Meyer and Johannes Rissik, who both surveyed and mapped the area, are thought to have named the city - combining their common first name and adding “burg,” the Afrikaans word for “fortified city.” Today, Johannesburg is a dynamic cultural and financial center, the largest economy of any metropolitan region in Sub-Saharan Africa.
