Reykjavík, Iceland
Reykjavík, Iceland’s capital, as well as the largest city, is thought to be the location of the first permanent settlement in the country. Established around 870, according to Landnáma, or the Book of Settlement, Ingólfur Arnarson decided the site by using a traditional Viking method - casting his high seat pillars (Öndvegissúlur) into the ocean until he saw the coastline, and then selecting the spot where the pillars landed on the shore. Steam from hot springs in the region are said to have inspired Reykjavík's name, which loosely translates to Smoke Cove, with the city often referred to as the Bay of Smoke.
