South Lake Tahoe, California

Incorporated in 1965, South Lake Tahoe, California, the largest city in the Lake Tahoe region, is a major tourist destination, and home to a number of world-class ski resorts and casinos, as well as countless summer outdoor recreation activities. Lake Tahoe, named in the Washo language by the Native Americans who once occupied the area, is a large freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada mountain range with a surface area of 191 square miles and shore length of 71 miles. Legalized gambling arrived at the lake in 1944, when Harvey's Wagon Wheel Saloon and Gambling Hall first opened, and Squaw Valley Ski Resort, just across Lake Tahoe, served as the site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.
