Kitzbühel, Austria
Kitzbühel, which had once only been visited as a summer vacation spot, become Austria’s premier winter sports destination, when in 1893 Franz Reisch first rode down the iconic Kitzbüheler Horn Mountain on skis. Today, the Kitzbühel ski area features over 100-miles of slopes, 55 state-of-the-art gondolas and lifts, action-filled snowboard parks, over a 90-miles of winter hiking and much more. In the middle of the 12th century, under the reign of Bavarian dukes, the name of “Chizbuhel” appeared for the first time in a Chiemsee document dating back to 1165. Forming “Chizbuhel” is a fusion of both the name “Chizzo” and the description of its location on a “Buehel” (hill).
