Marquette, Michigan

On August 21, 1850, Marquette, Michigan was named in honor of Jesuit Father Marquette (1637-1675), who was an early explorer of the Great Lakes. After Marquette had taught in France for several years, the Jesuits assigned him to Quebec in 1666 as a missionary priest to the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The Father showed great proficiency in learning local languages, which propelled his redeployment to additional missions farther up the St. Lawrence River in the western Great Lakes region. In 1673, Father Marquette requested a leave and joined Louis Jolliet, a French-Canadian explorer – manifesting the historic Jolliet-Marquette expedition that traveled down the Mississippi to within 435 miles of the Gulf of Mexico.
