Silicon Valley, California

In 1971, Ralph Vaerst (1927-2001), a successful Central California entrepreneur, was given credit for coining the phrase ''Silicon Valley" -- referencing the high concentration of companies involved in the semiconductor (silicon is used to create most semiconductors commercially) and computer industries that are concentrated in the valley. Home to many of the world’s most powerful technology corporations in the world, Silicon Valley is defined as the southern region of the San Francisco Bay Area–the Santa Clara Valley, including the city of San Jose and the southern Peninsula Valley, as well as the southern East Bay.
