Washington D.C.
The founding of Washington, DC (District of Columbia) has historical roots in the United States Constitution. In 1788, James Madison, a founding father, explained the need for a separate federal district. On July 16, 1790, the Residence Act authorized President George Washington to select the area now designated as Washington D.C., as the capital of the United States of America.
