Dallas, Texas
There remains a mystery surrounding how Dallas, Texas got its name. Although most believe the city was named for Alexander James Dallas, who became Vice President under James K. Polk, there is debate if the name Dallas originated from Alexander’s brother or even his father. Additional "name" theories range from early settler Joseph Dallas to an official town naming contest. In 1844, however, the surveyed area was officially dubbed Dallas, Texas.
