Newport, Rhode Island
The history of Newport, Rhode Island is in essence the very definition of its name. In 1639, eight founders formed the town Newport, after leaving Boston, Massachusetts because of their belief in the separation of church and state. This tradition of settling in a ‘Newport’ to practice religious freedom continued. In the 1650s, a group of Jews, who were fleeing from the Spanish Inquisition, as well as the Quakers, also escaping religious intolerance, settled in Newport, Rhode Island.
