Toronto, Canada
Toronto, Canada’s name was derived from the Mohowk Indian word tkaronto. Tkaronto described The Narrows of Lake Simcoe, "where there are trees standing in the water." In 1680, Lake Simcoe began appearing in maps and other works as Lac de Taronto. In 1665, it was an Italian cartographer who altered the spelling of Tartonto to Toronto.
