Puebla, Mexico
In 1531, the city of Puebla, Mexico was named La Puebla de los Ángeles. Then, in 1862, four decades after Mexico's independence, the Mexican Army defeated French forces at the Battle of Puebla. It was during this invasion attempt, that the people of Puebla sided with the French. As a punishment to the religious people of the Puebla, the historic city was renamed for the victorious General Ignacio Zaragoza: Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza.
