In the 12th century, the small fishing village of Amsterdam, Netherlands was settled, eventually becoming one of the most active ports in the world. Amsterdam, Holland’s name has a literal translation of the ‘Amstel Dam’, or more directly, the town where the Dam for the nineteen-mile Amstel River was constructed.
