Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota
Although, Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota have been nicknamed the Twin Cities since 1875, the two cities actually have a thriving rivalry. Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota, was named by a local schoolteacher who combined the Sioux Indian word for water, ‘mni’, and the Greek word for city, ‘polis’. Saint Paul, the capital of Minnesota, was named after the former Saint Paul’s Chapel, which is now the Cathedral of Saint Paul.
