Soufriere, Saint Lucia

Soufriere, Saint Lucia, a picturesque fishing port, was named after the areas sulfur springs. Soufriere literally translates in English as ‘sulfur mine’. Sulfur, or sulphur, is a chemical element that is found near both hot springs and volcanic regions, and produces an odor that is often described as smelling like “rotten eggs”. In addition, Soufriere is also the name of a dormant volcano on the Caribbean Sea Island of Guadeloupe.
