Corrientes, Argentina

In 1588, Corrientes, Argentina was founded by Juan Torres de Vera y Aragón, to serve as a stop between Asunción, Paraguay and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Originally, the town was named San Juan de Vera de las Siete Corrientes or Saint John of Vera of the Seven Currents. The "seven currents" refers to the seven peninsulas on the river’s shore and corrientes literally translates to ‘currents’ or ‘rapids’ in English.
