New York City, New York
New York City, New York was first named Nouvelle Angoulême or New Angoulême in 1524, by the Italian explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano. In 1614, Dutch fur traders named their settlement Nieuw Amsterdam or New Amsterdam. However, in 1664, the English conquered the Dutch colony and renamed it "New York” in honor of the Duke of York, James Stuart (1633-1701).
