Austin, Texas
In 1821, Stephen Fuller Austin (1793-1836), known as the father of Texas, placed an advertisement in a New Orleans newspaper listing that land was available on the Brazos and Colorado rivers. By the 1830s, Austin, Texas was settled and named “Waterloo”. In 1839, however, Waterloo became the capital of the newly formed Republic of Texas and was renamed after its founder, Stephen Fuller Austin.
