Providence, Rhode Island
In 1636, Providence, Rhode Island was founded by Roger Williams (1603-1683), an English theologian and an advocate for separation of church and state. As a religious exile of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Roger William’s named the colony Providence Plantation, due to his belief that God had sustained his followers and brought them to this land. In theology, Divine Providence, or Providence, is the presence of God over the events in one’s life.
