Palma de Mallorca, Spain
Palma de Mallorca, the capital of the island of Mallorca, Spain, is believed to have been inhabited since the Paleolithic period (6000–4000 BC). In 123 BC, the Romans first settled Palma de Mallorca and named the island “Palmaria”. The name Mallorca is derived from the Latin term “insula maior”, or larger island. The name “Ciutat de Mallorca”, or the City of Mallorca, was in common use before the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and is still regularly used by locals.
