Las Vegas, Nevada
In 1829 Antonio Armijo, a Spanish Mexican explorer, discovered Las Vegas, Nevada as a pivotal resting area. In the 1800s, the Las Vegas Valley had an extensive green area or meadow; Vegas is “meadows” in Spanish. While heading north and west along the Old Spanish Trail from Texas, Armijo’s party frequently stopped in Las Vegas and used the abundant artesian spring wells in the valley.
