Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
In 1681, William Penn (1644-1718) was awarded the land of the Pennsylvania Colony, becoming the founder and "Absolute Proprietor" amongst his brethren. As a practicing Quaker, Penn gave Philadelphia a name that invited people to practice their religion freely. Adapted from Greek, Philadelphia has roots in two words: philos, or “love”, and adelphos, or “brother”, generating its popular nickname The City of Brotherly Love.
