Mexico City, Mexico
In 1325, the ancient city of Tenochtitlan, Mexico City, Mexico, was built by the Mexica, or the Aztecs. The Aztecs told a story of how Mexico City was founded: According to the Mexica fable, the god Huitzilopochtli led them to their new home with a sign, an “eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak." The name Mexico was derived from Mexitli, another name for the god, Huitzilopochtli.
