Santa Fe, New Mexico
In 1598, Spanish settlers first occupied northern New Mexico. Santa Fe, New Mexico was named and founded by Don Pedro de Peralta (1584-1666), the Governor of New Mexico. Governor Peralta honored Santa Fe with the distinguished name "La Villa Real de la Santa Fé de San Francisco de Asís" or "The Royal City of the Holy Faith of Saint Francis of Assisi." Santa Fe has a translation of “holy faith” in English.
