Miami, Florida

Miami, Florida is named for the Mayaimis, a Native American Indian Tribe, who lived around Florida's Lake Okeechobee. The Mayaimis are named after the lake, which was originally called Mayaimi, or “big water”. At the beginning of the 18th century, “raiders from the Province of Carolina burned villages, and killed or captured Florida tribe members.” Today, all that is left of the Mayaimis are the ceremonial and village mounds that they built around Lake Okeechobee, and the canals for their canoes.
