Ice Hockey
The history of ice hockey may be traced to the early 1800s in Nova Scotia, Canada, where the Míkmaq Indians played a game on ice called ‘tooadijik‘. Additional evidence suggests that ice hockey’s origins may be attributed to Canada in the mid-1800s; when British soldiers played a winter game that was derived from English field hockey and Indian lacrosse. Today, the International Ice Hockey Federation oversees the popular sport throughout the world. In addition, ice hockey was first presented as an Olympic sport in 1920, and, in 1988, the first competitive women’s Olympic tournament was played.
