Coffeehouses

Coffeehouses or coffee shops are restaurants that primarily serve coffees and other hot beverages, such as teas. In the late 15 century, the first coffeehouse is believed to have been opened in Istanbul. Then, in 1645, coffeehouses began to appear in Venice, Italy and beyond. England saw its first coffeehouse in 1650, when a Jewish man named Jacob established a cafe. Today, Oxford's The Grand Cafe is still open for business! United States coffeehouses initially developed in the Italian immigrant communities' espresso and pastry centered cafes. Trend setting establishments since the late 1950s, US coffeehouses have also served as entertainment venues, most commonly for music, but also a forum for art shows, informal poetry and author readings.
