Comedians
With roots in American vaudeville and the English Music Halls of the later 19th century, as well as through the writings of respected humorists, such as Mark Twain, comedians (thankfully) continue to make us laugh. If the fathers of modern American stand-up comedy, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, George Burns, and Milton Berle all arrived from vaudeville, and nightclubs and casinos nurtured the careers of Alan King, Danny Thomas, and Don Rickles, it’s no wonder that notable comics have become television and films stars, as well as developed iconic shows, like “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show.” In addition, comedy festivals continue to be a major tourist draw, inviting international audience to laugh at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Scotland, the Just for Laughs in Montreal, Canada, and The Melbourne International Comedy Festival – just to name a few!
